can't connect via SSL

Here's my set-up:

  • PopFile? 1.10 under WinXP SP3, with SSL support installed
  • Thunderbird 2.0.0.18
  • ISP: Sympatico.ca

Have been using Popfile without problems for a few years. As of yesterday my ISP implememted SSL for both POP and SMTP. Now I can no longer receive mail through PopFile? -- keep getting timeouts.

Here's my (non-PopFile?) Thunderbird settings, which work fine:

Server Name: pophm.sympatico.ca
Port: 995

Username: foo@sympatico.ca

Use secure connection is set to SSL.

Use secure authetication is unchecked.

Here's what I've tried as PopFile? Thunderbird settings:

Server Name: 127.0.0.1
Port: 995 (have also tried 110, since I assume my client can't connect to PopFile? via SSL.)

Username: pophm.sympatico.ca:foo@sympatico.ca (have also tried pophm.sympatico.ca:995:foo@sympatico.ca:SSL)

However, nothing has worked so far.

As a point of interest: when I added the SSL support module, I told it to 'automatically configure' Outloook Express. That client isn't able to connect either.

Here's the ouput of the Message Capture utility:

    Hi.

You are right. You should NOT configure your email client to use SSL to talk to POPFile. I think the log that you posted (which I shortened a bit) shows how your client is trying to talk ssl to POPFile.

Make your client use port 110 and try again. If that doesn't work, please post another log showing the connection attempt.

Can you connect to your provider without using POPFile?

Have been using Popfile without problems for a few years. As of yesterday my ISP implememted SSL for both POP and SMTP. Now I can no longer receive mail through POPFile? -- keep getting timeouts.

There are three things you need to do to fix this problem:

    (1) add SSL support to POPFile (which you say you've already done)

    (2) add ":ssl" to the end of the Username used by Thunderbird (e.g. if you were using pophm.sympatico.ca:foo@sympatico.ca before then change this to pophm.sympatico.ca:foo@sympatico.ca:ssl)

    (3) ensure POPFile is not using concurrent POP3 connections (make sure “Allow concurrent POP3 connections” is set to "No" on the Configuration page in the UI)

That is all that is needed - there is no need to change the POP3 port.

I suggest you revert to the Thunderbird and POPFile settings you were using before your ISP switched to requiring SSL connections and then go through the three steps listed above.

Here's the output of the Message Capture utility

If you want to use the Message Capture utility then you must make sure that POPFile is not running BEFORE you try to use the utility (otherwise the utility will display the " A copy of POPFile is running. It has signaled that it is alive with process ID..." message and exit).

Shut down POPFile then try the Message Capture utility again.

And here's a (long) chunk of my log file

This shows that you have POPFile's POP3 listing port set to 995 which is not a good idea since this port is normally used for POP3 SSL connections. When POPFile uses SSL the SSL connection is between POPFile and the mail server, not between the mail client and POPFile.

How did you add the SSL support? There's more than one way to do it, so I'd like to know which way you used.

        2008/12/14 15:46:43 5504: pop3: 667: POP3 proxy done

There is something wrong here. If Thunderbird's username has been set to pophm.sympatico.ca:foo@sympatico.ca:ssl then POPFile should be trying to make an SSL connection to the mail server but the log file shows that an ordinary POP3 connection is being attempted.

If POPFile was trying to make an SSL connection then the log file should say:

Attempting to connect to SSL server at pophm.sympatico.ca:995

        instead of

Attempting to connect to POP server at pophm.sympatico.ca:995

        (2) add ":ssl" to the end of the Username used by Thunderbird (e.g. if you were using pophm.sympatico.ca:foo@sympatico.ca before then change this to pophm.sympatico.ca:foo@sympatico.ca:ssl)

        Done.

Have you double-checked this? You said earlier that you have tried lots of different combinations here, including specifying port 995 in the username. You need to ensure :ssl is specified to tell POPFile to use SSL for the connection.

          Still not working.

I've tried installing SSL support two ways: first, through reinstalling PopFile? from scatch using popfile-1.1.0-windows.zip and selecting the SSL option during installion. I've also tried using the addssl_rc4.zip add-on.

At present I'm trying a fresh resintall with the SSL option selected. Hostname: 127.0.0.1, User Name: pophm.sympatico.ca:foo@sympatico.ca:ssl. Still get a time-out.

Hope you can help. I think PopFile? is a fabulous product, and I'd hate to have to stop using it.

The log seems to show that your mail client is still trying to talk ssl to POPFile:

             Command: --€=[01][03][00][00]$[00][00][00][10][00][00]9[00][00]8[00][00]5[00][00]3[00][00]2[00][00][04][00][00][05][00][00]/[00][00][16][00][00][13][00]þÿ[00][00]--

Make sure that your client is not set to connect via SSL.

OK, I have it working now. I suppose I should have mentioned from the start that I have copied my PopFile? settings from old computers to new ones more than once. I did this again several weeks ago, and PopFile? continued to work as usual. Then, as noted, it suddenly stopped working when my ISP made some changes to its SSL servers, etc, a few days ago.

In any case: I completely uninstalled PopFile?, including all my user data, and reinstalled from scratch. Now it's working. I guess some problematic config setting was 'stuck' in there somewhere.

I'll have to recreate my buckets and magnets and so on, but that's no big deal. At least I have PopFile? back :) Thanks for all your help.
