How to Update/Chagne computers

Hello, been using popfile for a long time. Currently running 0.22.4

I have a new computer arriving tomorrow and I need to know what steps are involved in moving my database and whatever settings to a new computer.

I had done this once before a long time ago but I still had the install for the version so I just installed new and then replaced the popfile folder with the old one...

I think this message has the information you require:

If you are still unsure how to do the upgrade, ask for more help.

I've been using popfile since before they used the documents and settings/users folders so all my stuff is in the popfile dir.

I guess I'll just download an old installer install that, copy my folder over and then install over with a newer version. I'm the only user so I don't really mind my stuff is in a single dir... makes it easier to backup a whole dir than several.

      Thanks.

I would not recommend that if you are a Windows user.

If your new computer uses Windows 7 then at present only the 1.1.1 installer is compatible (earlier installers do not use the new manifest format which Windows 7 requires therefore these installers will not work properly).

If your new computer uses Vista then only the 1.0.0 or later installers will work properly (for much the same reason that only 1.1.1 or later will work properly on Windows 7).

If everything is stored in the POPFile 0.22.4 program folder then all you need to copy across are the following files:

        popfile.cfg (the configuration file)
popfile.db (the SQLite database containing the wordlists, buckets and magnet data)
stopwords (the list of words POPFile ignores)

If you have message history then you'll also need to copy the "messages" directory if you want to be able to reclassify any of these messages on the new computer.

If you still want to keep everything (programs and data) in one folder do not install POPFile in the default location (C:\Program Files\POPFile) otherwise the UAC in Vista and Windows 7 will probably cause you lots of grief (i.e. stay away from the "Program Files" directory and other similarly protected locations to avoid UAC problems).

My new computer has XP downgrade so luckily those pitfalls wont apply. But thanks for the tips on which files are key for backup :)
