Help → New Verizon FIOS email settings hosed my POPFile
Brian - below is the text from the defect ticket I should've started. Sorry.
Anyway - I did what you suggested and still nothing. Do you need to see the log file?
I have been using POPFile for many years. I love this tool and use it with
Outlook Express. However, last month, Verizon sent an email dictating that
the following changes must be made to my email account:
# Incoming mail server (POP3): incoming.verizon.net
# Incoming Server Port Numbers: 995
# Outgoing mail server (SMTP): outgoing.verizon.net
# Outgoing Server Port Numbers: 465
# Make sure SSL encryption is enabled for the incoming and outgoing mail
server.
I made the changes (with the appropriate provisions for POPFile) and ever
since POPFile has not worked. I have tried fresh uninstall/re-installs. I
have researched the POPFile FAQs, searched the internet and even called
Verizon Customer Support. I have changed POPFile settings, still to no
avail. I really want to continue using POPFile. Can someone please help me
with this problem.
Comment (by brian):
Do you have a record of the settings you were using before Verizon told you to change your settings?
If so then all you have to do as far as POPFile is concerned is change things back to those settings and then make two changes in Outlook
Express:
(1) Verizon want you to use SSL when collecting POP3 email. Since you are using the Windows version of POPFile 1.1.3 all you need to do is add ':ssl' to the end of the username. For example if the account name in Outlook Express was configured as
incoming.verizon.net:username
change it to
incoming.verizon.net:username:ssl
Adding ':ssl' at the end tells POPFile to (a) use SSL for the connection and (b) use port 995 on the incoming.verizon.net server. Note that Outlook Express must NOT be configured to use SSL for incoming email because the SSL connection will be made between POPFile and the Verizon server (not between Outlook Express and POPFile).
(2) Verizon want you to use SSL when sending POP3 email. POPFile does not process outgoing email so you can follow Verizon's instructions for configuring the SMTP server settings in Outlook Express. This includes configuring Outlook Express to use SSL for outgoing email.
Since this is an Outlook Express configuration problem, you should have asked for help in the HELP forum instead of raising a 'POPFile defect'
ticket as it it much easier to discuss things in the forums:

I think the quickest way to solve this problem is to get Outlook Express working without POPFile. Once you have Outlook Express configured to send and receive mail using the new Verizon settings (and checked that it works!) it should be easy to reconfigure Outlook Express to use POPFile to classify your incoming email.
After making sure that Outlook Express can send and receive email using the new Verizon settings all you should need to do is make the following changes to Outlook Express:
Outlook Express Account Properties - Server tab
Incoming mail (POP3):
change incoming.verizon.net to 127.0.0.1
Incoming Mail Server:
change username to incoming.verizon.net:username:ssl
Outlook Express Account Properties - Advanced tab
Server Port Numbers - Incoming mail (POP3)
Change 995 to 110
(this assumes you have not changed POPFile's default POP3 listen port)
This server requires a secure connection (SSL)(below the Incoming mail (POP3) port setting *)
Make sure this box is NOT ticked (because Outlook Express must not use SSL for incoming POP3 mail when POPFile is being used)
Note that Outlook Express's Advanced tab should still use port 465 for Outgoing mail (SMTP) and the SSL box for Outgoing mail should still have a tick in it.
These changes should get POPFile working. If you still have problems, post the POPFile configuration file (popfile.cfg) as sometimes users try changing settings there when trying to use SSL. The location of popfile.cfg is shown on the ADVANCED page in POPFile's UI.
(* Edited to clarify which SSL box should not be ticked)
