Stopped working on two PCs

Hi

I have been using POPFile with great success for many years and have been recently been running it on two PCs. Within days of each other they just stopped working. POPFile can contact the IMAP server OK as it will read the folder list successfully but it won't pick up emails. I made no changes to the POPFile settings. The only thing I can think of is a conflict with a Windows update of which there have been several (Windows 8.1). I have tried a system restore to a month ago to no avail.

POPFile version is v1.1.3 (05/24/14 15:51 - ).

This is doing my head in as I relied so heavily on it and now have a 100 emails a day in the Inbox including loads of luncheon meat.

Many thanks in advance for any help.
Any help greatly received.

Are you using SSL to connect to the IMAP server?

A small patch has been created to update the SSL files in POPFile 1.1.3 and this might solve your problem because it updates a couple of POPFile files in addition to the SSL files.

Further information and a download link can be found in the "SSL with IMAP module on Exchange server" topic:

Thanks for the prompt reply and your efforts in identifying the cause and putting together an update utility.

It worked first time on one PC :-) but not on the other? On the 2nd PC I've checked for windows updates etc. and willl keep battling on today.

Any other thoughts or ideas of other items that might conflict.

      Again, many thanks

On the 2nd PC I've checked for windows updates

The security update for Internet Explorer 11 released on Patch Tuesday this month caused problems on my main Windows 7 system but worked perfectly on my other Windows 7 computer.

I had a lot of trouble getting the KB2953522 update installed on my main computer (it took me three days and involved installing several fixes for Windows Update, one of which was over 500 MB!).

However the next time I rebooted that computer a lot of error messages were displayed. It turned out that installing the update had corrupted several key internet-related DLLs.

Perhaps something similar has happened on your second PC?

On my system the corruption meant I could no longer see the "Internet Options" (e.g. selecting "Tools" then "Internet Options" from Internet Explorer's menu had no effect - no dialog box appeared, not even an error message).

When I ran the System File Checker it reported lots of problems which it was unable to correct. A full scan can take a while but one of the files that was being corrupted was 'mshtml.dll' which can be checked in a few seconds from cmd.exe (run as an administrator) using the command

        sfc /scanfile=c:\windows\system32\mshtml.dll

So I had to uninstall KB2953522 and search the Microsoft Support site for more ideas. Eventually (i.e. a week later) I found some advice (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/windows-updates-fail-to-install-on-win7-64-pro/65c067c6-5716-43c3-be5d-7732ed4bb310) that helped me install KB2953522 without corrupting those important DLLs.

Figured it was something related to MS Updates - and now the first PC that was working has stopped and the 2nd one started - aaaarrrrgggghhhh.

Again thanks for you hard work - you clearly know more than me. I'll try a system scan whilst I am out this afternoon and then a reboot.

And now the same thing happens again within 18 hours of each other.

I have run the SSL installer and restarted with no joy.

            What now?

I have run the SSL installer and restarted with no joy

I suspect the problem is that OpenSSL has been updated since I built the SSL installer.

The 'updateSSL-for-POPFile-1.1.3' installer installs Net::SSLeay v1.58 (which uses OpenSSL 1.0.1f).

A few weeks ago Net::SSLeay v1.64 (which uses OpenSSL 1.0.1h) was released.

I will update the SSL installer for POPFile 1.1.3 to use the new SSL package.

Many thanks for you continued efforts to this great utility usable.

I look forward to a link to the updated updater.

                Again many thanks

I've uploaded a revised SSL updater:
                  http://getpopfile.org/downloads/updateSSL-mk2-for-POPFile-1.1.3.zip

The only change is that this version installs Net::SSLeay v1.64 (which uses OpenSSL 1.0.1h).

OpenSSL 1.0.1h was released on 5 June 2014 and includes seven security fixes:

I'm afraid this didn't make any difference even after a restart.

When I first ran POPfile there was a string of pop-up warnings talking about a polling error / timeout.

                    Any suggestions?

So does this imply that if I don't use SSL to connect to the server then it might work?

                      Again thanks for any input.

It is worth trying this in case the problem is nothing to do with SSL.

There have been some more updates to OpenSSL recently (http://www.openssl.org/news/) so there will probably be some updated Perl packages coming out soon.

The revised SSL updater I created last month is now out of date as newer versions of Net::SSLeay and IO::Socket::SSL are available.

I think it would be better if I worked on the Windows version of POPFile 1.1.4 instead of trying to update the SSL support for POPFile 1.1.3.

It is too soon to talk about a release candidate but I hope to have a beta version ready for testing by next weekend.

Thanks for update. If it helps I had already tried it with SSL disabled to no avail if helps with any diagnosis.

I really appreciate the effort you are putting in.

                            Thanks for the report.

The Windows version of POPFile 1.1.3 uses Perl 5.8.9 and cannot use concurrent POP3 connections when SSL is used.

POPFile 1.1.4 will use Perl 5.16.3 and allow concurrent POP3 connections when SSL is used.

Some SSL certificate validation changes will also be included in POPFile 1.1.4.

As far as I know, nothing else has changed as far as the IMAP module is concerned.

                          • Message #1924

By default POPFile's log file does not include much detail. If you set the logging level to 1 then the IMAP module will generate more information about what it is doing.

The "Preparing a log to help debugging problems" page explains how to change the logger level. I recommend trying logger level 1 because level 2 makes the log harder to understand.

Here are some examples taken from a simple "Refresh list of folders now!" operation:

                            (A) Logger level 0 (the default setting):

                            2014/8/25 21:32:11 3624: IMAP-Client: 178: Connected to imap.gmail.com:993 timeout 60

                            (B) Logger level set to 1:

                            2014/8/25 21:33:23 4112: IMAP-Client: 128: Connecting to imap.gmail.com:993

I think logger level 1 will provide enough detail to see where things are going wrong.

Logger level 2 will add a lot of detail but this can make the log file harder to understand, especially if you use the POPFile UI.

Here is my log - seems to be a problem with the Jobs folder?

No, I think the problem is that the IMAP module has not managed to log in and therefore cannot see any mailbox folders.

The logfile should have some lines showing a login attempt.

                                IMAP-Client: 210: Logging in
                                IMAP-Client: 341: << A00000 LOGIN "xxxxx" "xxxxx"[0d][0a]

Are the IMAP account login username and password set correctly in the POPFile UI's "IMAP" section (on the CONFIGURATION page)?

Have you tried refreshing the list of folders ?

Yes I have reset the passwords and yes the IMAP module can refresh the folder list - or is there no log-in check on this section?

                                  Thanks

Yes. POPFile could not find 'Jobs' folder in your mailbox.

It seems that something is wrong with the "Jobs" folder.
Does the "Jobs" folder exist in your mailbox?
If it exists, the other mail client can access to the folder?

As Brian said, you can use the "Refresh list of folders now!" operation. Then POPFile records the folder lists in your mailbox.

I am having the exact same issue. PopFile? has not been able to access my Imap folders since 8/26. All is well with the server, I have turned SSL access on and off and rebooted a couple times with no change.

Any suggestions are appreciated. I love PF and have used it for many years :)

                              Hi,

                              Sorry for inconvenience.

Please take a look at a following Brian's post and get detailed log files:

Clearly there was some mis-match between Popfile and the IMAP server as once I deleted some folders and re-synched it read one of the two montitored folders, but not the INBOX. Deleting the 2nd folder (renaming it as INBOX) made no difference so I think I might be into a clean install and have to go back through the learning process unless anyone has a better suggestion.

think I might be into a clean install and have to go back through the learning process

I think the IMAP module stores all of its settings in POPFile's configuration file (popfile.cfg). The location of this file is shown on the ADVANCED page in the POPFile UI (at the top of the long list of POPFile parameters).

I suggest you shut down POPFile, make a copy of popfile.cfg (so you can revert to it if necessary) then use an ordinary text editor (e.g. notepad.exe) to remove all of the IMAP settings from popfile.cfg (i.e. delete all of the lines starting with "imap_"), save the modified popfile.cfg file then re-start POPFile.

Edit: When POPFile starts up and finds there are no IMAP settings in the configuration file it will add the default IMAP settings including the option to enable the IMAP module

You can then re-enable the IMAP module, restart POPFile to access the IMAP module then configure the IMAP settings (IMAP server, username, password, refresh folders list, set up watched folders etc). This will leave POPFile's database untouched so it should still be able to classify incoming mail.

If this does not work and you decide to re-install POPFile, save a copy of POPFile's database (popfile.db) so you can use it with the fresh installation.

I think you can reconfigure the IMAP settings by following steps:

                                  1) Open the Advanced tab and clear 'imap_bucket_folder_mappings' and 'imap_watched_folders' settings and push 'Update' button.
                                  2) Open the Configuration tab and push 'Add' button and select a watched folder (by default 'INBOX').
                                  3) Then, select folders for each buckets and push 'Apply' button.

                                    Brian, Naoki,

Many thanks for your suggestions and continued assistance.

It worked - I used Naoki's suggestion as it seemed to provide a shortcut to Brian's (which would have worked I am sure). It took my Outlook client a couple of hours to catch up with all the emails but I'm now back where I was.

You have saved me many hours of grief - I am reaching for the donate button.

                                    Again, many thanks.

                                      Update

Today I moved a few folders around and Popfile failed.

Going back through the same steps fixed it. Does this mean this has to be done every time an IMAP folder structure is amended?

                                      Thanks

After you have configured the IMAP module POPFile will log in to the IMAP server and then spend its time doing the following activities on a regular basis:

                                        • monitor the specified IMAP folder for new incoming mail, classify any new mail found and move the classified mail to the IMAP folder associated with the relevant POPFile bucket

                                        • monitor the IMAP folders which are associated with POPFile's buckets to see if the user has moved any messages from one folder to another (i.e. to see if the user has reclassified any messages) and update the POPFile database to take these reclassifications into account

In order to perform these tasks POPFile uses some lists of IMAP folders stored in its configuration data (popfile.cfg). These lists are created when you configure the IMAP module.

If you create some new IMAP folders POPFile will not look at them because it only knows about the IMAP folders listed in POPFile's configuration file.

If you delete any of the IMAP folders defined in POPFile's configuration file this will cause problems when POPFile tries to access the non-existent folders.

If you make changes to the IMAP folders after configuring POPFile then you will need to make some changes to POPFile's configuration.

The changes you need to make to POPFile will depend upon the changes you have made, e.g. if you add a new IMAP folder you may need to create a new POPFile bucket and associate this new bucket with the new folder.

For some changes it may be possible to simply shut down POPFile, edit some lines in popfile.cfg and restart POPFile but for others more drastic action, as described by Naoki, may be required.

Remember that adding and/or removing buckets can adversely affect POPFile's accuracy:

Is it possible to 'unbalance' your corpus?

What variables affect 'good' statistical ratings?

                                          Yes this all makes sense.

I have just moved country and so where I file things has changed ...

Brian, again, thanks for your support.
