Server problem?

Is POPFile having server problems now? I am in the Cleveland area, and cannot connect to server, except after restarting computer, when one of my mailboxes got one message and then, same problem (econd mailbox could not connect at all).

Obviously a problem connecting to localhost8080. I have made no changes to my email setting. Problems started suddenly this morning. same in IE as in Firefox. Anyone? I have win 7 64-bit.

Is POPFile having server problems now?

POPFile runs locally, i.e. it runs on the computer you installed it on. POPFile does not rely upon a connection to POPFile's server (getpopfile.org) when it classifies your mail.

I ... cannot connect to server, except after restarting computer, when one of my mailboxes got one message and then, same problem (econd mailbox could not connect at all).
      ...
Obviously a problem connecting to localhost8080

      There are separate problems here:

      (A) If your email client (or email program) is unable to access incoming mail then there may be a problem with POPFile or with the email server that POPFile is trying to contact.

      (B) If you cannot access the POPFile UI (normally accessed via http://localhost:8080) then there may be a problem with the webserver built into POPFile.

If POPFile stops running then you'll see both problems. I think the first thing to do is check that POPFile is not crashing as soon as it tries to start up or as soon as it tries to classify some email.

The easiest way to do this is to shut down POPFile and then use the special debugging shortcut on the Start Menu:

Start -- All Programs -- POPFile -- Support -- Message Capture utility

This will start POPFile and display some messages in a scrollable window. Here is a sample report:

I closed and opened my email client, and suddenly, I could open POPFile via localhos8080. So, while Messagec Capture could not, earlier, complete its run because I could not close POPFile (catch 22), I could now do it, and here is the report (which I cannot interpret, unfortunately):

And, again, the first mailbox worked fine, but then, I believe when my email client reached the second affected email address, it could not connect to the server (for either email address)

Hope the report above tells you something Brian :-)

        Thanks,

        • Message #2027

When I restart the computer, and start my email client, the first email address protected by POPFile downloads email. When the time comes for the second email address protected by POPFile, I get an error message saying "POPFile has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program."

So, it seems as if POPFile works one time, the stops working.

After further testing, it seems as if one of the two mailboxes is the problem. I will now compare the two, and see if something has changed in one of them.

Don't really have an answer to this problem. One mailbox works, another does not, suddenly. What could be wrong? Again, the error message: "POPFile has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program."

POPFile can be configured to provide a detailed log about what it is doing. This log will include the full text of all the email messages processed by POPFile so be careful about posting extracts from the log here.

See the Preparing a log to help debugging problems page in the online manual for instructions. The Logger Level page has some examples of the different levels of logging.

Since the problem appears to happen after POPFile has been processing an email account you'll need to set the logger_level to 2. Each entry in the log will be timestamped so it should be easy to find the relevant part of the log.

The problem might occur when POPFile finishes handling the first account or it might occur when it starts to handle the second account.

                  • Message #2032

I will configure the log, but let me clarify that when I hide the "bad" mail box (so it does not try to download mail), I can download mail from the "good" mail box as many times as I want, and POPFile does not crash. It crashes when I try to download mail form the "bad" mailbox.

                    Regards,

                    Hans L

Hello again, after my having configured the log.

Below is the log. In it, I have replaced my email address with something else. Here are some interesting occurrences:

                      - (search for) MY EMAIL ADDRESS MINUS “.COM: this is a place where my email address occurred, but without ".com".

                      - (search for) [email protected]: this is a place where my email address is broken up. See the continuation below.

                      - (search for) YYYYYYY.com: this is the continuation of the broken up email address.

Finally, look at the very end of the log: [0d][0a]--8d248e4cb81d016-
Looks like something is missing at the end.

That is what I have discovered by reading through the log. You will no doubt discover more (I cannot interpret the log, that's for sure :-)

The log contains a lot of so called explicit language. That is because I receive some 400 spams a day, most of which are caught by SpamAssassin?, and the rest by POPFile (which is phenomenal in my view).

                      The log:

Brian, on a whim, I deleted and retyped the password for the "bad" mailbox, and now, the problems is gone. I have no idea what happened. I was not in this mailbox's settings yesterday night or this morning, so something must have corrupted the password "all by itself".

I thank you for your help, which inspired me to do a number of things, including this "in desperation" move of replacing the password.

                          I am greatly relieved.

                          Again, thanks.

Thank you for the POPFile log file.

MY EMAIL ADDRESS MINUS “.COM: this is a place where my email address occurred, but without ".com".
[email protected]: this is a place where my email address is broken up. See the continuation below.
YYYYYYY.com: this is the continuation of the broken up email address.

These entries are nothing to worry about. Although the "Read slurp data" lines appear to break the email address into pieces, POPFile is still able to see the entire email address.

Similarly the body of the email message will have words broken up by "Read slurp data" lines but POPFile will in effect join these parts together to see the entire word when analysing the message.

Finally, look at the very end of the log: [0d][0a]--8d248e4cb81d016-
Looks like something is missing at the end.

Yes, it seems to have read almost the entire first message before things went wrong.

That message had been detected as spam (and converted to an attachment) before it got to POPFile. It is possible that the format of the revised message caused the problem, or it could be that POPFile's SSL code ran into problems or it could be something else.

Does the email account that works OK use SSL?

POPFile 1.1.4 will use a more up to date version of Perl and a newer SSL library to handle connections to mail servers that require SSL.

Brian, you did not see my last message above (follows here too):

Brian, on a whim, I deleted and retyped the password for the "bad" mailbox, and now, the problems is gone. I have no idea what happened. I was not in this mailbox's settings yesterday night or this morning, so something must have corrupted the password "all by itself".

I thank you for your help, which inspired me to do a number of things, including this "in desperation" move of replacing the password.

                              I am greatly relieved.

                              Again, thanks.

                              Hans L

There was obviously something with the password that was corrupted or that corrupted the process. No idea how it happened. I scanned my entire computer with Norton Internet Security before I deleted and reentered my password. There were some Trojans, but I believe they were only in emails that I had never opened or at least not clicked on.

You said "POPFile 1.1.4 will use a more up to date version of Perl and a newer SSL library to handle connections to mail servers that require SSL." Two comments: I use SSL and it works fine, and, I did not know that POPFile was supported anymore. I am delighted.

Again, thank you for your help, and for your interpretation of the log file. It will no doubt help me in the future.

                              Regards,

                              Hans L

PS. Any way to get notifications from this forum when someone answers in a thread?

Did you get a copy of your original message (the "Is POPFile having server problems now?" one) when you created this topic?

Have you had any emails showing new messages added to this topic?

I've received 13 "Re: Server problem?" msgs so far (my first reply (Message 2025) followed by messages 2026 to 2036 inclusive and message 2038).

I didn't have to enable anything to get these messages ~ and I cannot find a way to turn them off :)

Again, thank you for your help

Now that things are working again you can change the logger_level back to 0 or 1. If you leave logger_level at 2 then POPFile will generate huge log files containing the full content of every email it processes.

Are you sure that the forum software has your current email address? The "Settings" link at the top right of this page can be used to change your email address (if you are logged in, of course!).
