POPFile 1.1.1 & Outlook - Session has expired

I've been using POPFile for quite a while now, including up until recently on Windows 7 RC with Outlook 2003. I recently "upgraded" it to the released version and now I'm having difficulties with POPFile. I've always had a Configuration page set up as a folder under Outlook so I can access my POPFile config pages from within Outlook. Now, when I click on it, it comes up with the History page, but no messages. If I click on one of the tabs (i.e. Buckets), I get the following message:

"Your POPFile session has expired. This could have been caused by starting and stopping POPFile but leaving your web browser open. Please click one of the links above to continue using POPFile."

If I click on one of the tabs yet again, it goes back to normal (appears to issue a new session according to the HTML links when I hover the mouse over the tabs). When I leave the config pages, though and then come back later I have the same problem all over again.

Help?

P.S. This is on Windows 7, with Outlook 2003 SP3. I have Firefox 3.5.4 as my default browser, and IE8 installed.

I've always had a Configuration page set up as a folder under Outlook ... If I click on one of the tabs (i.e. Buckets), I get the following message...

I think the problem may be in the address you specified for that folder in Outlook.

To get the default HISTORY page the address should be http://localhost:8080 (or http://localhost:8080/history) or maybe http://127.0.0.1:8080 (or http://localhost:8080/history). If you have changed the UI port then you'll need to replace "8080" with the correct port number.

If the address includes the session ID (e.g http://localhost:8080/history?session=fL5Ri2h) then you'll get the message about an expired POPFile session.

Thanks for the reply Brian, but I had the address set correctly at http://localhost:8080.

I noticed that when I set it to http://127.0.0.1:8080, it came up with the default skin & a list of messages on the history page from a few days ago. This leads me to think it was an IE8 cache issue - I cleared the cache and it seems to have gone back to normal. I'm hoping this has fixed it permanently.

      Thanks again,

      Tim

... which, regrettably, it hasn't. I'm still having the same problem. First time I open the page in Outlook, it comes up as a blank (i.e. no messages) History page. When I click on one of the tabs at the top (coolblue skin), I get the "Session Expired" message. Third click takes me to the proper page.

Does it make any difference if you open your browser before you click the link in Outlook?

My old system was not very powerful and I found that things worked better if I started my browser before I tried to use any POPFile links (in a message header or from the system tray icon).

If my browser was open and displaying an empty window then the links would work, but if my browser was not running then the links would cause the browser to open but my system was so slow that by the time the browser window opened it seemed to have forgotten what it was supposed to do so I got an empty window (there may also have been a Windows error message about being unable to display the page).

Does the current version of Firefox (3.5.5) work any better?

            Hi Brian,

Thanks for your help. I can't say whether or not have IE open makes a difference. It seems Outlook is hard-coded to use IE (I say this because of the "clicks" when I click on a link - Firefox doesn't do this) even when FF is the default browser.

Accessing the config pages via Firefox or IE directly in the browser seems to work fine - the problem only arises in trying to get to it within Outlook. Honestly this isn't much of a problem, I just need to rethink how I do this stuff and start accessing it in a browser window.

Still, if you have any other suggestions...

            Cheers,

            Tim

POPFile's installer creates a Start Menu shortcut to the UI:

Start -- All Programs -- POPFile -- POPFile User Interface

What happens when you use this shortcut: does the UI appear in Firefox or does it appear in IE?

                Brian,

I had Firefox set up as default browser & the POPFile link you described opened in FF. I switched the default browser to IE &, as you would expect, that link then opened in IE. The first time I opened it in IE, I got a warning that Intranet settings were off. I enabled them, but that hasn't made any difference. I've deleted and re-created the link folder in Outlook several times & it always comes up as I described above. If I open localhost:8080 in a browser, it always comes up correctly.

                Shrug...

It looks like you may be right about Outlook being coded to use IE even if it is not the default browser.

My default browser is Opera but I have noticed that some (rarely used) programs use IE to display a page. I've not bothered to make a note of which programs do this, but I will try to pay more attention the next time this happens.

I should have used Google before I posted my previous reply:

                      Brian,

Switched to the beta of Office 2010. It appears (from the lack of audible clicks when I click through links) to use the default browser in Outlook. Still, my problem remains...

                        Still, my problem remains...

I think it is worth summarizing the problem (to save others from having to read all of the history):

                        Windows 7
                        POPFile 1.1.1 (Windows version)
Office 2010 beta (problem first reported when using Outlook 2003 SP3)
default browser is Firefox 3.5.4 (or is it 3.5.5 now?)
                        IE8 is also installed

In Outlook a folder has been configured using the address http://localhost:8080 (this is intended to make it easier to access POPFile's UI from within Outlook)

Clicking that folder in Outlook opens the default browser (Firefox) but instead of showing the UI's HISTORY page with a list of recent messages all you get is a HISTORY page with no messages listed.

If you then try to click on one of the tabs on that page (e.g. BUCKETS) then the UI displays a message saying "Your POPFile session has expired. This could have been caused by starting and stopping POPFile but leaving your web browser open. Please click one of the links above to continue using POPFile."

(I hope that summary is accurate...)

What does Firefox's address panel show when you click that Outlook folder and get that empty HISTORY page?

When you try clicking one of the tabs on the empty HISTORY page (and get the session expired message) what does Firefox's address panel show?

Were you using an earlier version of POPFile on Windows 7 without any trouble? The POPFile 1.1.1 installer and many of the programs it installs were built with a newer compiler in order to be compatible with Windows 7.

I don't use Outlook or any version of Office so I'm running out of ideas...

I'm puzzled that the browser's being launched at all. My setup opens POPFile within Outlook, not in a browser.
                          I'm using
                          Windows XP
                          POPFile 1.1.1
                          Office 2007
                          default browser Firefox 3.5.x
                          IE8 also installed.
I have an Outlook folder whose home page is set to http://127.0.0.1:8080// and with "Show home page by default for this folder" ticked. I can't see any other options, for the folder or for Outlook in general, that seem relevant. It works perfectly smoothly and I seem to have full access to all POPFile functions within the Outlook window. I'm using it now; it doesn't handle the indentation of the messages well but that's all.
