POPFile は Perl で書かれています。Perl は、現存するほとんどすべてのプラットフォームに移植されているインタプリタ言語です。このため、(C などの言語とは異なり)どんな Perl 環境であっても、コードを変更することなく、同じ POPFile を動かすことができるのです。

Windows ユーザは、POPFile のバージョンのうち、以下の 2つのいずれかを選ぶことができます。

?Windows 版の POPFile !このバージョンは、POPFile をすぐに使うことができるよう、ユーザフレンドリなインストーラアプリケーションと、ユーザインタフェースに簡単に接続することのできるタスクトレイアイコンを搭載しています。インストーラは多くの言語をサポートしており、POPFile が動作するために必要なすべてのファイルをインストールします。

?クロスプラットフォーム版の POPFile !クロスプラットフォーム版は、Perl がすでにインストールされていればどんな環境でも（Windows も含む）使用することができます。Windows 環境に Perl がインストールされていないなら、POPFile を使用する前に Perl をダウンロードし、インストールする必要があるでしょう。POPFile のいくつかの機能を使用するためには、標準的な Perl の配布パッケージには含まれていないモジュールが必要となることに注意してください。このため、POPFile を動作させるためにはいくつかの追加モジュールをインストールする必要があるでしょう。詳しい情報は、POPFile ドキュメントの POPFile が動作するために必要な Perl 環境 に掲載されています。

POPFile 1.1.1 (以降) のインストーラは、これらの古いバージョンの Windows での動作をサポートしていないバージョンの Perl を使用しています。インストーラはまた、6つのプログラム (popfile.exe、popfileb.exe、popfilef.exe、popfileib.exe、popfileif.exe、popfile-service.exe) をインストールしますが、これらのプログラムは、古いバージョンの Windows をサポートしていないバージョンの Perl Dev Kit (PDK) を用いて作成されています。

このバージョンの Perl の動作環境は、Windows 2000、Windows XP、Server 2003、Vista、Server 2008 であり、このバージョンの PDK の動作環境は、Windows 2000 SP4 以降です。これ以前のバージョンの Windows は公式にはサポートされていません。

インストーラは、Windows 2000 よりも古いシステムで動作していることを検知すると、警告を表示するでしょう。この警告メッセージは、サポートされていないバージョンの Windows にインストールされようとしており、その結果 POPFile が正しく動作しないかもしれなことを説明しています。

We do not know if any users are still using the Windows version of POPFile with Windows 9x, Windows Millennium or Windows NT. It is now more than a month since the intention to drop support for Windows 9x, Windows Millennium and Windows NT was mentioned in the Open Discussion forum and so far there has been no feedback at all. Perhaps this means nobody will be affected by this change?

As mentioned above, users of Windows 9x, Windows Millennium or Windows NT systems can still use the Cross-Platform version though this may require the installation of some more software on their systems. This is not the only option available to these users.

If you want further information on getting POPFile 1.1.1 (or later) running on Windows 9x, Windows Millennium or Windows NT systems please post to the Open Discussion forum.

The POPFile 1.1.0 (or earlier) installer can be used on these older versions of Windows. There are no known issues specific to these versions of Windows. (The restriction that concurrent POP3 connections cannot be enabled when POPFile's optional SSL support is used also applies to POPFile 1.1.1 or later).
