Spam or junk mail is hard to define. Everyone has their own definition, but a common factor usually considered junk mail is unsolicited commercial email.

For example if you buy something from eBay you want and expect a confirmation email from the seller that they have received payment and have shipped, but you probably don't want to be put on their mailing list automaticly.
