If you are using the SMTP server which requires authentication (SMTP AUTH), you may not be able to send e-mails after installing POPFile and configuring your e-mail client to work with POPFile. This is because changing POP3 user name for POPFile will cause failure in the SMTP authentication.
Some mail clients (ex. Outlook Express) can use different user name and password on receiving and sending. In this case, by setting original (before configuring with POPFile) user name and password on outgoing mail server (SMTP server), you will be able to send e-mails.
For more information about configuration, see the user manual of your mail client. The way of configuring some specific e-mail clients is written in the 'How to configure some specific e-mail clients' section below.
If you are using e-mail client which can not use different user name and password on receiving and sending, you may be able to avoid this problem by creating a new account (for sending only) in the e-mail client. Needless to say, your e-mail client must support multi accounts.
Keep the original account (for receiving) configured with POPFile. And then, create a new account (for sending) . In the new account, use the original user name and password (and no receiving). Use the account for receiving on receiving e-mails, and use the account for sending on sending e-mails.
Not only POPFile, many of the e-mail proxy servers such as Virus scanners which are placed between e-mail clients and e-mail servers are working with configuration of changing the user name to form of 'pop.isp.com:user' (if your POP3 server is 'pop.isp.com' and your user name is 'user'). Some mail clients use the same user name configured with POPFile in SMTP authentication by default, and then they fail to send. To avoid this problem, you need to configure the original user name ('user', in the above example) in the settings of the outgoing server (SMTP).
If you are using Outlook Express, you can use different user name for outgoing server. The following instruction is for Outlook Express 6.
If you are using Outlook, you can also use different user name for outgoing server. The following instruction is for Outlook XP (2002).
