POPFile Portable (beta test)

POPFile Portable is an automatic mail classification tool that runs directly from your USB thumbdrive, portable hard drive or any other portable media. You can plug it right into any Windows computer and use it just like you would on your own computer. It is a repackaged version of POPFile designed with portability in mind, so it has the same great features as POPFile, but there's nothing to install when you use it on another computer.

* WARNING *

POPFile Portable is available as a beta version for testing.

It may not work properly on your system!

This beta version of POPFile Portable is a repackaged version of POPFile 1.1.1 RC5.

  • POPFilePortable installer (4.86 MB, beta version)
This installer includes all of the optional components (IMAP, NNTP, XMLRPC etc), all of the SSL support files needed for POP3 or IMAP access to services such as Gmail, and offers the option of installing the internal and Kakasi parsers for handling Japanese (Nihongo) messages.
  • Mecab Parser for POPFilePortable (9.2 MB, beta version)
This installer adds ths MeCab parser to an existing POPFile Portable installation. It includes the extra support files required by MeCab; there is no need to select the “Nihongo” option in the POPFile Portable installer if only the MeCab parser is required for processing Nihongo mail.

Installing POPFile Portable

The installer will install all available POPFile options, including support for SSL connections (as required for POP3 and IMAP access to Gmail). It also offers an option which will install the internal and Kakasi parsers used to help analyse Japanese (Nihongo) messages. POPFile Portable requires about 12 MB of storage space (18 MB if the Nihongo option is selected).

A separate installer is available which adds the MeCab parser to an existing POPFile Portable installation. MeCab is a more accurate parser for Japanese messages, partly because it uses a much larger dictionary than Kakasi. The MeCab installer is almost twice the size of the POPFile Portable installer and adds about 50 MB to an existing POPFile Portable installation.

Installation options supported:

  • Default (includes all skins, all UI languages, NNTP, SMTP, XMLRPC, IMAP, SOCKS, SSL support) - the default setting used by the POPFilePortable installer
  • Default + internal parser + Kakasi parser for Nihongo - select the Nihongo option in the POPFilePortable installer
  • Default + internal parser + MeCab parser for Nihongo - use the default setting in the POPFilePortable installer then run the MeCab parser installer
  • Default + internal parser + Kakasi parser + MeCab parser for Nihongo - select the Nihongo option in the POPFilePortable installer and then run the MeCab parser installer

The installer will automatically add POPFile Portable (which runs the portable version of POPFile) and POPFile Portable Maintenance (an easy way to run several of the POPFile utilities) to the PortableApps.com platform's menu.

If the POPFile Portable installer is unable to find the PortableApps.com platform on any connected device you can install POPFile Portable almost anywhere, e.g. X:\demo\POPFilePortable. Once the installer has finished you will find three files in the X:\demo\POPFilePortable folder:

help.html A simple help file
POPFilePortable.exe Special launcher program which runs POPFile as a portable application
POPFilePortableMenu.exe Special utility which displays a simple maintenance menu

These two program files ensure that the correct environment has been set up before calling the standard POPFile programs found in the POPFilePortable\App\POPFile subfolder. If you try to run any of the programs in this POPFilePortable\App\POPFile subfolder things will go wrong!

Running POPFile Portable

After running the installer two entries will be added to the PortableApps.com platform's menu:

  • POPFile Portable
  • POPFile Portable Maintenance

The first entry runs the portable version of POPFile by running the special launcher program (POPFilePortable.exe) found in the POPFilePortable folder. This launcher creates some temporary environment variables and adjusts the configuration data before starting the portable version of POPFile.

By default POPFile updates a PID file every 5 seconds; one of the launcher's tasks is to reconfigure POPFile to use the user's temporary folder to store this PID file instead of using POPFile Portable's Data folder. If you prefer you can use the ADVANCED page in POPFile's User Interface to change how often this PID file is updated or even prevent POPFile from updating the PID file (see config_pidcheck_interval).

The second entry uses the POPFilePortableMenu.exe program found in the POPFilePortable folder. This program displays a simple menu to make it easy to run some of the POPFile utilities, such as the database integrity checker. This menu passes the appropriate command-line options to the special launcher program (POPFilePortable.exe) found in the POPFilePortable folder.

WARNING

Do not try to run any of the programs in the X:\PortableApps\POPFilePortable\App\POPFile folder!

You MUST use only the special launcher (POPFilePortable.exe) or menu (POPFilePortableMenu.exe) programs.

POPFilePortableMenu.exe Display

POPFile Portable is a portable version of POPFile for Windows which has been packaged using the current release (0.91.7) of the PortableApps.com Installer. Several extra programs had to be written for POPFile Portable, such as the launcher program, to replace some of the utilities normally shipped with the Windows version of POPFile. After rearranging the files into the 0.91 (2009-06-24) version of the PortableApps.com Format Specification, the PortableApps.com Installer was used to package the portable version of POPFile.

Visit PortableApps.com to find out more about the PortableApps.com Suite, the PortableApps.com Platform and the wide range of applications available. The Suite is a single installer that installs a complete collection of portable apps including a web browser, email client, office suite, calendar/scheduler, instant messaging client, anti-virus, audio player, sudoku game, password manager, PDF reader, minesweeper clone, backup utility and integrated menu, all preconfigured to work portably.
