Incredimail is not an email server, but rather, an email client. It is, according to About.com, “A program used to read and send email messages. As opposed to the email server, which transports mail, an email client is what the user interacts with.” 1) What it offers is “a fun and easy to use email client that adds spice to the messages you send.” 2) Having said that, Incredimail does not offer it's own email accounts like AIM, Gmail or Hotmail. What this means is, if you want to use Incredimail and you want to use POPFile, you have to use one or more of these email accounts, too. If not for POPFile, the following instructions would best be served on an Incredimail help file. It is assumed that one already has an email account configured and needs only to know how to add POPFile. However, email accounts are added to Incredimail, just like POPFile. It is for this reason that additional guidelines are included here to the Incredimail 'How To' files.
If you haven't already done so, sign up for a Yahoo account here.
Visit the following Yahoo page for preliminary instructions concerning Incredimail.
Incredimail won't automatically configure Yahoo. Visit the following Incredimail page for preliminary instructions concerning Yahoo.
Follow the steps given, then return here to configure your account to work with POPFile.
Note: “On April 24, 2002, Yahoo Mail stopped providing free POP3 access or Auto Mail Forwarding. These features are now only available for Yahoo paying customers. If you wish to receive and read your Yahoo Mail using any email client such as Outlook Express, Eudora or IncrediMail, you must purchase a Yahoo Mail Plus subscription” 3) or use an application that provides POP3 access to Yahoo Mail such as YPOPs!
“YPOPs! is an open-source initiative that provides free POP3 and SMTP access to your Yahoo Mail account. YPOPs! is available on the Windows and several Unix platforms. This application emulates a POP3/SMTP server and enables popular email clients like Outlook, Incredimail, Eudora, Mozilla, Calypso, etc., to download/send email from Yahoo accounts.” 4)
Sign up for a YPOPs! account here.
To configure YPOPs! to work with POPFile in Incredimail, see the instructions Configure Incredimail for YPOPs! using POPFile below.
OK – First we'll configure Incredimail to work with Yahoo! Mail Plus using POPFile. Follow these steps:
(1) Open Incredimail. Click on 'Tools', scroll down and click on 'Accounts…'
(2) Highlight the Yahoo account you configured above and click 'Properties'
(3) On the 'General' tab, you can change the 'Account Name' to your first name, your nickname or any other name as you would like it to appear in your emails.
(4) On the 'Servers' tab, you need to make the following changes. Note the original Incoming Mail Server (under 'Servers Information') and Username (under 'Incoming Mail Server') and write them down.
(5) Change the Incoming Mail Server to:
127.0.0.1
(6) Change the Username to:
pop.mail.yahoo.com:Username
(7) Check 'Remember password'. The values used in step 6 are the original Incoming Mail Server and Username that you wrote down in step 4 above. Notice that a colon ':' is used to separate these two values (this is the default separator used by POPFile; if you have configured POPFile to use a different separator, use that instead).
(8) Next, if you haven't already done so, you need to click 'My server requires authentication' under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' section. Open 'More Settings' and click 'Log on using' with the following:
Username (same as your Username used to sign in) password (same as your Password used to sign in and is case-sensitive)
(9) Check 'Remember password' and click 'OK'
(10) On the 'Advanced' tab, the 'Server Port Numbers' are:
Outgoing Mail (SMTP): 465 This server requires a secure connection (SSL) Incoming Mail (POP3): 995 This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
(11) Finally, under the ‘Delivery’ section, the ‘Leave a copy of messages on server’ is normally unchecked. If, for any reason, you want to leave copies of your messages on your server, check this box. Then, check the box ‘Remove from server after’ and click ‘up or down’ a short number of days before messages are deleted – a good idea if you don’t visit the original server often!
Regarding Yahoo! Mail Plus, all three boxes in this section should probably remain UNCHECKED. It’s really up to you, though. If your Incredimail crashes, for example, you’d still be able to view your Yahoo! messages directly on the Yahoo! site. Again, it’s your choice.
(12) Click 'OK' and then click 'Close' to finish the configuration. Go check your mail!
OK – Next we'll configure Incredimail to work with YPOPs! using POPFile. Refer to YPOPs! Help File and follow these steps:
(1) Open Incredimail. Click on 'Tools', scroll down and click on 'Accounts…'
(2) Highlight the Yahoo account you configured above and click 'Properties'
(3) On the 'General' tab, you can change the 'Account Name' to your first name, your nickname or any other name as you would like it to appear in your emails.
(4) On the 'Servers' tab, you need to make the following changes. Note the original Incoming Mail Server (under 'Servers Information') and Username (under 'Incoming Mail Server') and write them down.
(5) Change the Incoming Mail Server to:
127.0.0.1
(6) Change the Outgoing Mail Server to:
127.0.0.1
(7) Change the Username to:
127.0.0.1:123:Username
Notice that a colon ':' is used to separate these values (this is the default separator used by POPFile; if you have configured POPFile to use a different separator, use that instead).
(8) Check 'Remember password'.
(9) Next, if you haven't already done so, you need to click 'My server requires authentication' under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' section. Open 'More Settings' and click 'Log on using' with the following:
Username (same as your Username used to sign in) password (same as your Password used to sign in and is case-sensitive)
(10) Check 'Remember password' and click 'OK'
The values used in step #7 are the original Incoming Mail Server and Username that you wrote down in step #4 above along with an alternate port number (123). It is necessary to change the port number since POPFile is already using the default port. You must also check the port configuration in YPOPs! by right-clicking the system tray icon (for YPOPs!) and clicking on 'Configure' to open the Configuration Window. NOTE: If you configured YPOPs! to have the icon hidden from the system tray and you want to reconfigure it, all you need to do is to launch YPOPs! again from its shortcut. YPOPs! will detect that it's already running and will automatically show you the Configuration Window.
Click on 'Network' from the list on the left as shown here:
According to YPOPs! Help File:
Bind on I.P address: If your PC is on a network (LAN, Cable, etc) it might have an I.P assigned to it. You can specify the I.P address YPOPs! should bind on here. By default, it will use localhost, i.e., 127.0.0.1. By specifying a "non-localhost" I.P, users in the network can access YPOPs! running on your PC. Any changes made to the I.P here, requires YPOPs! to be restarted for the change to take affect. NOTE: The help assumes that localhost is the I.P which will be used by YPOPs! If you use some other I.P address, please keep that in mind when reading the rest of the help file. POP3 Port: POP3 mail servers run on port 110 by default. This is the default port number for YPOPs! as well. But, if you're already running a mail server or have an antivirus application with email scanning enabled, then in all likelyhood you have not been able to run YPOPs. You can either change the port settings in your mail server or change it in YPOPs. YPOPs can run on any TCP port in the range 1 - 65535. Change the port number here, and make the necessary change in your account settings in your email application as well. Restart YPOPs! for this change to take affect. Enable SMTP: Enable this option if you would like to use the SMTP feature of YPOPs!. Make a note that the SMTP feature in YPOPs! is currently experimental and even when fully implemented, will not be able to support the same level of features one finds in standard SMTP servers. This is because the SMTP feature in YPOPs! is emulated and can support what Yahoo Mail's Compose Email feature provides. SMTP Port: If the SMTP feature has been enabled, this option will be active. SMTP servers run on port 25 by default. You might get errors that this port is already in use. This could be because of the presence of other mail servers, or anti-virus programs on your PC. You can change the port accordingly to avoid this error.
Per instructions already given, be sure that the 'POP3 Port' is '123' to match step #7 above. Otherwise, change both of these values to match each other or you will receive an error message!
For more information on the use of alternate ports, see the following POPFile Help File.
(11) On the 'Advanced' tab, the 'Server Port Numbers' are:
Outgoing Mail (SMTP): 25 This server does not require a secure connection (SSL) Incoming Mail (POP3): 110 This server does not require a secure connection (SSL)
(12) Finally, under the ‘Delivery’ section, the ‘Leave a copy of messages on server’ is normally unchecked. If, for any reason, you want to leave copies of your messages on your server, check this box. Then, check the box ‘Remove from server after’ and click ‘up or down’ a short number of days before messages are deleted – a good idea if you don’t visit the original server often!
Regarding Yahoo/YPOPs, all three boxes in this section should probably remain UNCHECKED. It’s really up to you, though. If your Incredimail crashes, for example, you’d still be able to view your Yahoo messages here. Again, it’s your choice.
(13) Click 'OK' and then click 'Close' to finish the configuration. Go check your mail!
