Access POPFile from within Outlook

One annoyance to using POPFile with Outlook is that the X-Popfile-link header is not easily accessed inside Outlook. Also, it is sometimes inconvenient to open a browser window to reclassify email. However, it is possible to access POPFile from within Outlook so you can reclassify messages without opening a separate browser window.

This trick depends on the fact that you can associate any web page with a mail folder in outlook, and make it display that page by default when you click on the folder. To create a popfile control center folder in Outlook:

  1. Open the Navigation page (ALT+F1 or find it under the View menu).
  2. Create a new folder.
    1. Right click on an existing folder.
    2. Choose New Folder from the popup menu.
    3. Enter a name for the folder like “POPFile”.
    4. Click OK.
  3. In the “Folder List”, right click on the new “POPFile” folder.
  4. Choose Properties from the popup menu.
  5. Switch to the Home Page tab.
  6. Enable Show home page by default…
  7. Enter http://127.0.0.1:8080 as the Address.
  8. Click OK.

Now any time you need to get to the POPFile Control Center, you just need to click on this folder.
